Function Hub focuses on hard and natural sciences, with an emphasis on fundamental research, engineering, technological innovation, and technology transfer. Aligned with advances in scientific research and evolving industry needs, Function Hub supports the commercialization of research outcomes and fosters collaboration between academia and industry.

Through interdisciplinary research that addresses national priorities and market demands, Function Hub currently focuses on four key thrust areas: Advanced Materials (AMAT), Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS), Microelectronics (MICS), and Sustainable Energy and Environment (SEE). These areas are supported by well-structured curricula and high-quality doctoral education.

Applicants may choose from the following programs to focus on during the Summer Camp:

Target Participants

We welcome potential FUNH PhD applicants for the 2026/27 Spring or 2027/28 intake, including:

  • Senior undergraduate students
  • Master’s students
  • Research assistants

Applicants with strong motivation and a passion for scientific research, as well as solid academic training or relevant research experience, are especially encouraged to apply.

  • Lab tours
  • Campus tours
  • Meetings with faculty members
  • On-campus workshops

Note: Specific arrangements may vary by Thrust; the above activities are for reference only.

Eligibility

Applicants should:

  1. Be prospective applicants for Function Hub PhD programs (Spring 2026/27 or 2027/28 intake)
  2. Rank within the top 30% in a relevant field, or demonstrate strong research potential
  3. Hold, or expect to obtain, a bachelor’s or master’s degree by the time of PhD application

Applicants are required to submit the following documents via the online system:

Mandatory

  1. Identity document
  2. Latest academic transcript(s) (Bachelor’s and Master’s, if available)
  3. Academic CV
  4. Enrollment or degree certificate(s) (Bachelor’s and Master’s, if available)

Optional (Recommended)

  • Proof of English proficiency
  • Research proposal
  • Awards or publications

Note: All documents must be authentic. Any falsification will result in disqualification.

Additional Information

Travel: Participants are responsible for arranging and covering their own travel expenses. Detailed transportation guidance will be provided by email upon admission to the Summer Camp.

Coverage: Accommodation and on-campus activities are provided by the organizer.

Regulations: Participants are required to comply with the policies and regulations of HKUST(GZ) and Function Hub.
